So on my birthday (February 23rd) I had the pleasure of recording electric guitars Which was actually quite awesome, Whilst we didn't finish recording all electric guitars, Ludo and myself are very happy with what we got. It was a long day but honestly, it was a great way to spend my birthday.
The main part that i want to talk about is the solo in song (still untitled but we'll get there). At first the solo was going to be a slide solo, with an extreme amount of fuzz on it to counteract the relatively chilled nature of the song, however Ludo said that it just sounded like some fancy noise with direction. He said that he wanted a solo that you could sing/had direction. Mentioning Led Zeppelin's Since I've Been Loving You and how despite the song being chilled and slow, the solo had direction and moments where Jimmy Page 'lets loose'. This then made me think of David Gilmour and solo's such as Comfortably Numb and Sorrow. In the end the solo changed from a slide solo, to one without and with less fuzz, Ludo kept pushing me and it made me realise that this is why I asked Ludo to be the engineer/producer, he doesn't hesitate to try and get the best out of me and for the first time I found myself writing solo that actually had depth to it, and how i felt works well with what the song represents, and whilst not the most technical solo I've played or written, it's probably the one I'm most proud of. He took a video of a take of it.
The set up that we had was quite simple but very effective. As we were using a valve amp (which sounds best when turned up quite loud), Ludo didn't want me to be in the same room as it so that my hearing wouldn't be damaged, so we just used long cables so that i could be in the mixing room with him. This made things a lot easier especially when it came t talking ideas and making quick guitar changes. As mentioned, we didn't get all the guitars recorded but today (27th) we're going to set the studio up to finish them off tomorrow. After that it will be acoustic guitars, bass and vocals, which won't take as long. I'm starting to feel quite proud with how it's all coming together.
