DAY OF SOUNDS

While Ludo and myself were recording drums, we obviously started talking about the guitars. Ludo pointed out the songs had a wide range of possible sounds and many ideas could be incorporated. And that is what today was for. We spent the day in the studio not recording, but trying out 5 guitars, my entire pedal board and testing out as many sounds as we could to try and determine what we would be recording in terms of guitars. Ludo said that he would rather spend a whole day doing this rather than do it on the day of recording and rush it due to time constraints. We also brought in a friend of mine, Dennis Dignal, who is a very talented pianist as I am thinking of having some piano in at least one of the songs and maybe some synth so we were also throwing about some ideas with him.
As I said, we had 5 guitars. Three electrics, a steel strung acoustic and a nylon strung one. The electric guitars where a Fender Telecaster with P90 pickups, an Epiphone SG with a Maestro Vibrato, and a Vintage Les Paul with mini humbucker pickups. All sound very different and coupled with different pedals, they open up an array of sounds to be discovered. We needed a sound for very upbeat loud rock, to more brooding rock, to acoustic rock. And also specific sounds for lead guitar to cut through doing solo's. It was a long day and quite stressful, but all in all I'm very happy with what we have decided, and we also came up with new ideas for a few of the songs.
